This body of work explores my interest in the oceans, water in general and American history. Nautical charts, now no longer in production, are lithograph prints, their paper is strong but supple and takes paint well.
I use out of date charts as they are otherwise destined for the landfills. I alter, manipulate or make image transfers of the
charts, being more interested in their graphic imagery and line quality, than their original narrative. My mediums are acrylic and encaustic paints combined with found objects such as mesh (symbolizing fishing nets), buttons (whalers carved them in their down time), old dress patterns, (navigational tools for women), graphite, ink and metal leaf. This work is particularly suited to commission work.
